We would like to breed from our British Lop gilt but don't really know where to start. AI or hire a boar...pros and cons would be appreciated, and any advice on where to purchase either please.

Hi

The main advantage over boar vs AI is that the pigs generally know what to do when where as successful AI is dependent on correct timing and people getting it right.

I would ask around about hiring the services of an unrelated boar and obviously the gilt will need to spend at least three weeks in his company, so you will see if she cycles again and she can be covered again.

If this doesn’t prove fruitful then AI is the option and there are three boar lines now standing at Deerpark in Ireland. You order the semen on a next day service and they supply the catheters and instructions! Deerpark is the only place to buy rare breed semen.

Which ever method you use, especially with a gilt, don’t assume she is in pig after service, keep checking if she comes back into season.
