Melton Mowbray Show and Sale 2014

The 2014 Melton Mowbray Lop of the Year Show was widely agreed to be one of the best we have held. The standard of the stock competing was some of the finest we’ve seen, while sale prices reflected a growing interest in the breed and the progress of the breed itself.

The Show

Showing started with some impressive breed classes on Friday, with high standards of showing stock suggesting that stakes for the coveted Lop of the Year were going to be extremely high! The British Lop Breed Champion was finally won by Giles’ Bezurrell Actress 318, who also went on to win Reserve Interbreed Champion that day.
Showing continued on Saturday in the lop of the year, with the Edgars making a return to the ring, competing for the title they have won many times in the past. Similarly, the Ardens were competing to defend their title from the previous year. James Brain entered with another strong boar while Giles Eustice had the pick of his stock from a very successful show season. The coveted Lop of the Year title was finally awarded by experienced judge Frank Miller, to Bezurrell Actress 316. Reserve champion was awarded to Goosetree Sunshine 14. For a full list of show results, please see below.

The Sale

This year the Melton Sale was arguably lacking in breed diversity which made the matching of January gilts and boars more of a challenge for buyers. Happily, the boars sold in good number. In- pig gilts sold well, with a respectable average sale price of £475 and a top price of £535.

In conclusion, we are delighted to have hosted another fantastic Lop of the Year Show and Sale alongside the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. The show and sale not only provides a perfect platform for showcasing the distinct qualities of the breed to so many new friends, but also helps us to ensure the movement of excellent breeding stock around the country, enabling the breed to continue to flourish. We look forward to continued support from our members nationally; this is always a great event to catch up with familiar faces and make connections with new breeders. It was lovely to see the strength of this network.
