Looking to buy pedigree gilt born late last year and wondering if anyone can give me a rough idea of what I should expect to pay.

As a rule of thumb, it costs £7 per week to keep a pig, regardless of age so, to produce a 30 week old gilt (which is probably what you are talking about) it will have cost £210 to produce, plus a bit more if she is registered and of good quality.

Do you know anyone who would have a good quality, 30 week old gilt for sale?

Hi Sam,

Normally you would farrow down around 12 months of age so you would be looking to serve an early January gilt after the 9th of September.

There will be the British Lop sale at Melton Mowbray in September. There will be in pig gilts there. It will be on the 11th of September(I think). Ask Frank to send you a list of entries when it is ready.

Your weaners are doing well out on the Cumbrian fells. I haven't seen them but John says they are doing OK.

Carole.

Thanks for letting me know, I'm glad they've gone to a good home.

Will there be gilts in my sort of price range? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something registered and with a good temperament. The other people I sell to don't really care whether or not her parents won any shows.

I'll look into going though because I imagine it'd be a good experience.

I guess the prices will depend on demand but there is usually very good quality pigs and they are card graded so you can see each pigs good and not so good points.

It is a good day out whatever.
